I’m all for streamline and convenient, but leave my bank out of it. The good news is that it seems like it’ll be an opt-in/out service. But some banks aren’t totally into the idea. They feel like it takes the user away from their own websites.
Long version short, Facebook wants to access your bank info, so that they can be a sort of “portal” into your bank accounts for you. You’ll be able to check your balance, see your transaction history, and card activity. The Wall Street Journal broke the story, and made it sound like Facebook is asking banks to hand over their customers’ account info, which isn’t exactly how it works.
What Facebook is trying to do, apparently, is serve as a method of getting you in touch with your bank. Let’s say you have a problem with one of your accounts; Facebook wants you to be able to message your bank through Facebook’s Messenger service. Rather than sitting on hold during a phone call, you can basically send a text message to your bank to get questions answered. The “opt-in” thing would allow Facebook to “see” your accounts. That way, you can check your balance, transactions, etc. There’s more information at the WSJ link above, as well as some clarification here.
