The ultimate California Gurl took some time to chat with Carson telling him how excited she is that her album is coming out and even compared it to the magic of Christmas eve saying:
When you’re a kid and it’s Christmas eve and you do this like little kick dance underneath your covers and you sequel and you just can’t contain your excitement? That’s how I feel right now.
Katy’s inspiration for this album goes back to her roots. She grew up in the California sunshine and while writing songs for this album she was trying to come up with something about growing up in the beach town of Santa Barbara. When that didn’t workout she ended up with this summer’s party anthem “California Gurls”:
I love seasonal songs. I’m a California girl and I think that I really love being a California girl because the sun shines so brightly and I think that affects my emotions, you know the serotonin level inside of me is generally positive but if I lived somewhere like Seattle or something I probably would more of a depressing songwriter.
It seems that Katy’s real inspiration is her fans saying that the songs that became apart of her life soundtrack growing up inspired her to write songs that will become the soundtrack for many of her fan’s lives:
That is the reason why I continue throughout the high-highs and the low-lows of this whole industry is because those voices that are commenting and the people that are coming up to me at the shows. I mean, I feel like I am being a voice for them in some ways and I’m giving them their soundtrack. And I knew growing up when I was hearing certain songs that I adopted as my own, whether they were for, you know, breakups or for, like, the soundtrack to my make out, I needed them. And they were so apart of my life and they so shaped who I am and I hope that in someways I can kind of, you know, do that with some people.
For all that, and more check out Katy’s entire interview with Carson:
The come back tomorrow (5pm PT/8pm ET) and watch Katy perform her newest songs from Teenage Dream as well as her classic hits on a free streaming concert as part of the Live on Letterman web series. This event is brought to you by CBS and AT&T.
