Ed Sheeran donated a signed guitar to help the family of a terminally ill 11-year-old, Melody Driscoll.
Melody suffers from Rett Syndrome, an incurable disease that attacks the brain. She is unable to walk to talk due to the disease. Ed first met Melody in the hospital in 2016. After learning about the legal battle Melody’s parents are currently fighting, he donated a signed guitar to help raise money.
Melody’s parents, Karina and Nigel, claim the hospital is trying to take the girl off pain relief medication. The hospital reportedly told the family that morphine and steroids are potentially damaging Melody’s liver. They were, therefore, hoping to decrease her intake of the meds.
This resulted in Melody’s parents launching a legal battle, which will cost £50,000.
Karina told the Mirror:
“I’d rather Melody had one more year filled with happiness than five years of pain. It’s only now we realize how few rights we have as parents but we won’t give up.”
The family is incredibly thankful for Ed’s donation. They plan to auction off the signed guitar. Karina said:
“It’s so lovely he’d think of us in this way. We are going to run a raffle so all of Ed’s fans have an equal chance of winning.”
The Driscolls posted pictures of the signed guitar on Twitter, as well. They’re still fine-tuning the details for the auction, but they promise news is coming soon.
We got pictures of Melody with Ed Sheeran’s guitar we are auctioning so everyone can see why we are doing it. For this beautiful little girl right here.
We are still waiting to hear from a few people regarding the way forward. Once we know the fine details ALL WILL BE REVEALED 💛 pic.twitter.com/cV6jh1rzSt— Melody In Mind (@KazzMarie) February 27, 2018
