A cop in the NYPD is blaming her positive drug test results on a surprising culprit: her hair weave.
According to The Shade Room, Sgt. Tracy Gittens is currently battling to keep her job after testing positive for marijuana during a random screening.
The test took place in January, 2017, and Gittens described the moment she heard the results:
“I was shocked. I do not do drugs… When they told me I tested positive I immediately volunteered to take another test. It was impossible for the test to be positive.”
Despite getting a 30 day suspension for failing the test, Gittens wanted to prove her innocence. So, she had urine, blood, and hair tests done with her doctor, and all tests came back negative.

However, she noticed that her nurse took hair from the back of her neck, while the police officer that did her positive drug test test had taken hair from the top of her head. This lead her to realize that the hair that lead to the positive result had come from her weave. She then paid out of pocket for a DNA test to prove the first hair sample was not hers.
Unfortunately, prosecutors are saying the DNA test actually showed the positive hair sample was from Gittens. Department Advocate Office attorney Jeanie Moran explained in a statement:
“Unless a maternal relative somehow came in and switched out the samples with her own hair, there is no way this hair could be anyone’s but Sgt. Gittens.”
Sgt. Tracy Gittens is still fighting to keep her job, so we’ll just have to see what happens going forward.
