It’s that time of year again… time to crown a new winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest. This year, the title went to Zsa Zsa, a 9-year-old English Bulldog.
The World’s Ugliest Dog contest in Petaluma, CA began as a way to promote pet adoption. As Christy Gentry, a publicist for the Sonoma-Marin Fair, says, “It’s a full red carpet.”
Of 13 contestants, Zsa Zsa came out the winner with her hanging tongue and severe overbite. The bulldog spent five years in a puppy mill in Missouri before she was put up for auction. A rescue group then bought her, and Megan Brainard of Anoka, MI finally took her home.

Megan named her dog after actress Zsa Zsa Gabor. She wanted to give her new best friend a beautiful name for all the dog has been through. “She is just so ugly, she’s beautiful,” Megan told the New York Times.
Megan drove Zsa Zsa all the way to California from Missouri for the contest. They won $1,500 and a pink trophy.
