An old joke that Pete Davidson told about the 2017 Manchester bombing at an Ariana Grande concert surfaced recently. After staying quiet for a bit, the singer has finally responded.

During a benefit show last fall, Davidson joked that Grande knew she was famous because “Britney Spears didn’t have a terrorist attack at her concert.”

Many fans were upset hearing this line and one Twitter user’s tweet in particular gained traction. The user questioned “why [Grande] is still with Pete.”

The 25-year-old defended her fiancé on Twitter, responding to the user:

“this has been v tough & conflicting on my heart. he uses comedy to help ppl feel better ab how f-ed up things in this world are. we all deal w trauma differently. I of course didn’t find it funny. it was months ago & his intention wasn’t/ is never malicious but it was unfortunate”

A source close to Davidson also came to his defense, telling People Magazine: “The joke was taken out of context. He lost his dad in [the] 9/11 [terrorist attacks] and is close with other victims of violent tragedies. As a way of coping he turns to humor…He’s obviously sensitive to tragedy as he lost his own father and his intention is to just make people laugh.”
