Last.fm Trends: American Idol: Who's On Top?

By Doug Lazy on August 5, 2010

With judges leaving Idol, by choice or by force, and more shake-ups planned to the format planned for the tenth season, it’s no surprise there are changes afoot for the winners too. The production company responsible for the chart-topping singles has switched labels, taking the next crop of artists to pastures new.

Rumors persist about the popularity of the acts on Idol, so to settle the argument once and for all Last.fm Trends shook down the top five artists the show has spawned…

In nine years some truly impressive talent has come through the doors of Idol. But sometimes they’ve had trouble getting off the ground without the weekly presence of a television crew beside them.

The Top Five chart is based on the number of Last.fm listeners playing the winners’ songs to date. At five it’s 2009 winner Kris Allen, a little behind Fantasia at number four. Modern country icon Carrie Underwood take the number three spot, with 392,047 listeners. Meanwhile, despite allegations that the series caliber is decreasing, it’s season seven Jordin Sparks that takes the number two spot.

But with a four album career now behind her, Kelly Clarkson screams ahead on the chart. As the first series winner the expectations of a nation were on her to perform well, something she seems to have lived up to since with a huge 29,579,365 scrobbles from 1,234,557 listeners.
