This is one of those first date stories to remember for sure. A couple were out surfing in Santa Cruz for their first date. While walking along the beach, Max Montgomery, had a sudden heart attack. His now-girlfriend, Andi Traynor, just-so-happens to be a doctor (anesthesiologist). She, once she quickly realized what was happening, spared no time jumping in to perform CPR.
While surfing a few minutes earlier, Max had noticed a slight burning sensation in his chest. He didn’t really think anything of it, and figured he was just getting tired from paddling. After getting out of the water, he felt exhausted walking across the beach, and then collapsed. Andi was walking several paces behind Max, but got to him quickly and started CPR. The couple say it was their first kiss.
What’s even more lucky is that while Andi was administering CPR, another beachgoer happened to be a nurse. While the two were tending to Max, paramedics were notified and arrived within 7 minutes. On the way to the hospital, they were able to revive Max using a defibrillator. He was sent in for bypass surgery to work on his heart, and clear “several blockages.” That was last October, their story has just gotten out, and the two are still dating, strongly.
They also seem to have a little sense of humor about the situation. Max says “I woke up in the ambulance and there was a guy leaning over me. He asked me did I know what happened. I said ‘Yeah I think I’ve had a heart attack, how embarrassing…’ It was embarrassing because I finally told this woman I really liked I had a crush on her and she had said it back… Who wants to date someone who just had a heart attack?” Andi says “A few weeks after his surgery he was recuperating and we were on the beach just talking… I said, ‘You can kiss me for real now.'” How sweet, a little funny, a lot scary, but an awesome outcome.
