Snow in Sacramento? There are a ton of weather forecasts out there all over the place, some of them are saying it might snow right here in Sacramento tomorrow morning, others are calling for just rain, and none of them seem to agree. Let’s go over some snow facts involving Sacramento specifically. We’re talking real snow, not hail like on Monday.

Ok, when was the last time we got any snow at all here in Sac? To the best we could find, that happened in 2009, but we only got a few flakes, no accumulation. In 1976 there was about 2 inches worth of accumulation, and the record for most snow in Sacramento happened in 1888 when we got a whopping 3-and-a-half inches of the white powder. There were some snow showers back in the ’90s too, but again, nothing much to accumulate except for on some grass and cold cars.
But what about tomorrow with this massive storm coming in from the north? Sure, we’re getting a lot of rain and unseasonably cool weather, and no doubt there’ getting a TON of snow in the mountains and higher elevations. Some weather forecasts say that some accumulation to about an inch is possible, others are saying no snow, just rain. Given the history of Sacramento and snow, we’re leaning towards the possibility of no accumulation, but it’s possible that we may see a few flakes fall and maybe even a coating on some outdoor surfaces, at least for a few minutes before rain moves in and melts it all.
“Will I be ok if I have to drive in the morning?” Well, that all depends. It won’t get below freezing tonight according to the forecast, so there won’t be any ice on the roads if that remains true. If it does snow, the possibility of snow sticking to the roads is very low, but in a town where snow never happens, the possibility of other drivers being distracted by the snow will be more of a danger than the actual snow (if any), so travel at your own risk.
The official National Weather Service is saying rain and thunderstorms tomorrow, and they’re not even saying a possibility of snow, but other forecasts like Accuweather say it’s a slight possibility. The Weather Channel seems to be siding more with the NWS, saying just rain. The possibility of small hail is there though, so maybe it will look like snow again for a bit at least. So will there be snow? Well, probably not, not this time.
