Shape Of Water’s Guillermo del Toro To Direct Netflix ‘Pinocchio’ Movie

Guillermo del Toro has been announced as the director and producer for a new animated feature film for Netflix. The movie will be a stop-motion version of the classic children’s tale, ‘Pinocchio’.

Shape Of Water and Pan’s Labyrinth  director, Guillermo del Toro, will officially be directing his first animated feature film with Netflix.

According to Variety, Del Toro will be leading the production on a new Pinocchio movie for the streaming service. The film will reportedly be a stop-motion musical version of the beloved children’s story. For his first animated film, del Toro will be writing and producing the movie as well as directing it.

Set in Italy in the 1930’s, the Pinocchio film will take place during the politically tumultuous time of the country. Del Toro described the movie as an incredible journey, where Pinocchio discovers and attempts to understand the world around him. “In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend.” Del Toro went on to add: “I’ve wanted to make this film for as long as I can remember.”

Del Toro has previously teamed up with Netflix in the production of its animated television series, Trollhunters. In this new Netflix production, del Toro will also be collaborating with the Jim Henson company, to help bring the film to life. Production for the new Pinocchio film is reportedly set to start this fall.
