Spain’s Tax Agency has accused Shakira of tax evasion. If found guilty, she could face jail time.
Spanish tax authorities are looking into Shakira’s financial records from 2011 to 2014, when she was living in Spain. They argue that the singer should have paid worldwide taxes while she was a Spain resident. She supposedly only paid the taxes for her earnings made in Spain during that time period.
State prosecution chiefs are currently looking over the case, reports the Daily Mail. Sources close to the pop star say she has never evaded tax payments. Shakira is ready to pay the amount required if authorities find that she has not paid enough tax due to a difference in “evaluation criteria.”
The fine could be up to several dozen million euros if Spanish authorities agree with the Tax Agency.
Her lawyers claim that since Shakira lived in Spain for less than 183 days, she did not have to pay tax on her international earnings.
