Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland recently revealed that she underwent a second kindey transplant, after her first one failed.

According to People, Hyland shared that this trying time led to struggles with her mental health. Hyland suffers from kidney dysplasia, which causes painful cysts due to her kidneys not fully developing as a baby. In 2012, she underwent a kidney transplant which was donated by her father. Unfortunately, in 2016, her body began to reject the kidney.

After many grueling treatments, Hyland’s kidney showed no sign of recovery, and she was required to begin dialysis. These procedures took their toll on her body, and also led to critiques about her appearance on social media. Combined with her feelings of personal failure that the kidney transplant was unsuccessful, Hyland shared that she fell into deep depression.

After battling depression and suicidal thoughts, Hyland reached out to someone close to help her through.  “It’s not shameful,” she explained. “For anybody that wants to reach out to somebody but doesn’t really know how because they’re too proud or they think that they’ll be looked upon as weak, it’s not a shameful thing to say. It’s not a shameful thing to share.”

Though she continues to deal with chronic illness and health challenges, Hyland shared how her family and friends have helped her through and that she has learned to reach out and ask for help.
