UPDATE 9:15 – The bag was not deemed a threat, the scene is clearing, and the building is reopened.
UPDATE 8:50 – Bomb squad officers have examined the bag, and have asked pedestrians across the street “to move out of a potential blast area as a precaution.”
UPDATE 8:30 – Q St. between 21st and 22nd remains closed, but people on the scene say “the mood was not tense and officers did not seem alarmed.” Apparently someone on a bicycle dropped a bag (like a laptop bag) off by the front door around 6am.
Original story:
This is an odd story to write considering it’s happening right here. It’s no different than when it happens somewhere else, but when it’s home, it’s just a different feeling, you know? The Sacramento Bee building at 21st and Q St. has been evacuated.
A building security guard found a suspicious package outside the building a little after 7am. The building manager called police, and nearly immediately, five Sacramento PD cars were parked around the building, blocking the roadway. Police also told all employees to evacuate the building.
Employees who arrived after police weren’t allowed into the office, leaving them to wait down the street. Other employees who haven’t arrived were sent an email telling them to work remotely today. We’ll keep you updated with some more info throughout the morning.
