Audience members at a Russian circus recently experienced a terrifying moment when a terrified bear went on the attack.

According to the Daily Mail, a circus bear mauled his handler during a recent performance in Russia’s Volgograd region.

After the bear’s handlers forced it to skateboard down a platform, the scared bear had enough. It began charging the circus members, who started hitting in response. This only upset the circus bear more, and it even managed to pin one of the handlers down. Eventually, the handlers beat the animal until they had it under control, and the handler that was attacked seemingly escaped without serious injuries.

However, in a terrifying twist, it appears there was no barrier preventing the bear from attacking the audience. It was also clear to viewers that the bear did not want to be there before it started attacking. A local woman named Anastasia Mishcherina spoke about the incident, saying:

“My relatives and their little son went to the show. They sat in the front row, when they announced the performance of a “bear-visionary” or something of that kind. My relatives wanted to take a video and went closer to the exit. Even on video it is clear that the animal was nervous. Reluctantly slipping off the ramp, the animal wanted to leave, but he was pulled back. Perhaps he realised that another flogging was waiting for him, and he decided to attack first.”

Another local resident told journalists that many refuse to attend the circus now. He explained:

“The circus is still in the village. They came from St. Petersburg – but now the whole Olkhovka passes by their big top tent in fear. I hope that the relevant authorities will conduct a check and understand what is going on in this circus.”

We hope everyone involved is okay, including the bear. We also hope that the circus will improve the conditions for any animals they use in their performances or, better yet, stop using animals all together.
