Future princess Meghan Markle recently attended her first Christmas lunch, an event put on by the Queen. While there, however, she got an awkward surprise from Princess Michael of Kent…

TMZ is reporting that Princess Michael attended the gathering while wearing a Blackamoor brooch. This antique piece of jewelry depicts a dark-skinned man wearing a turban, and many find it racially insensitive. Even worse, the line of jewelry is well-known for depicting “people of color in positions of servitude.”

Markle herself is biracial, and she’s spoken in the past about her experiences dealing with racism. At this point, it is still unknown how much contact she and Princess Michael had while at the event.

Unfortunately, the princess has had other racist controversies in the past. Back in 2004, she allegedly told a group of African-American diners in a New York restaurant to “go back to the colonies.”

Princess Michael has since apologized for wearing the brooch and said she didn’t mean to insult anyone and she would never wear it again.

There has been no official response from Markle as of now.
