When you’re becoming royalty, you get to do things like wear a half-million dollar wedding dress for a day. There aren’t pictures of the gown yet, of course, but all the reports are saying Meghan Markle’s dress is north of $500k. To put that into comparison to Kate Middleton’s gown from her 2011 wedding to Prince William, it’s worth about $200k more. Kate’s gown was estimated to be around $350k. Sure, a dress is nice and all, but I’d rather have a house or something. You know, something like that.

Who’s designing the dress? Well, Kate’s dress from 2011, according to Hollywood Life, was an Alexander McQueen dress. British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, of course, passed away in 2010. His company still designs though, so it’s possible that Meghan’s gown will be under the same label, but we just won’t know that until the day of the wedding. Meghan revealed a little about what she wants in a dress though after getting to wear one on TV as her character Rachel from “Suits” got married, seen in the clip below. She says “It’s not my personal style, because I’m a lot more relaxed than Rachel but I love that I got to play dress up in this gown. Classic and simple is the name of the game, perhaps with a modern twist. I personally prefer wedding dresses that are whimsical or subtly romantic.” Might be a clue about how it will look.

It’s also being reported from “sources” that the dress was the cause of a little budget shifting for the wedding. And by “shifting,” we mean the budget for the wedding had to be doubled because of the dress. But, it’s not all being paid for by the people of the United Kingdom, Meghan is actually fronting some of the cost herself. Specifically, the vacation for after the wedding. The honeymoon she’s planning herself as a gift to Harry is coming in at about $166k, being paid for out of her own pocket. Check out some more details about the expenses here. We’ll have to wait for the wedding on May 19th to see Meghan Markle’s dress.
