A 63-year-old man in north-eastern Romania is currently living as a dead man. Although he is clearly alive, he was declared dead in 2016.

According to Romania Insider, the man lost his case because he submitted the request for the annulment too late. His status as dead makes it incredibly difficult for him to live:

“The papers say I am dead, even though I am alive. I have no source of income since my papers show I am dead, I cannot get a job, I cannot do anything in the country.”

So what happened?

It turns out that he left Romania to work in Turkey back in 1992, last seeing his family in 1999. Due to some misunderstandings with the family, he didn’t keep in touch with his relatives. Because his wife hadn’t heard from him, she asked the court to declare him dead in 2013.

Earlier this year, Turkish authorities forced him to leave the country because of his expired papers. He returned to Romania only to discover that he was declared dead! How crazy is that?

The man is currently trying to move back to Turkey, but needs his death status lifted in order to prove his identity.
