Man Gets Out Of Speeding Ticket By Using His Squid

A man was pulled over for speeding, and had the most unique story to get out of the ticket we’ve ever heard – he was carrying a squid.

That isn’t a euphemism, he really used a squid to get out of a speeding ticket. This story was just told as part of the Smithsonian squid exhibit so it makes a little sense now. But there’s a lot of random info in this story, and we’re most interested in the speeding ticket, of course.

So, picture this. You’re driving on 50 heading to or from Tahoe, whichever. You see a police officer pull behind you, and the blue lights come on. You just got nailed for doing 80 in a 65, and you were just keeping up with everyone else. Hey, sometimes we get picked out of the crowd, it happens. You know you’re going down for speeding, so you start coming up with excuses to use. Something that could make the officer laugh, perhaps? The “I need the bathroom” bit is overplayed, they’ve all heard that one.

“I have a giant squid in my back seat” probably isn’t the first or second excuse you could come up with, likely because you don’t have a squid in your car. If you do, I’d like to ask you several questions. Anyway, this guy, Clyde Roper, is a zoologist, and he did happen to have a squid in his back seat. The officer who pulled him over was naturally curious, as you might have assumed. Clyde began teaching Mr. Officer about squid, why he was carrying it, and all sorts of random info. Clyde said “The policeman was completely hooked… He just thought it was so cool.” How have you ever gotten out of a speeding ticket? See some more info on the squid story here.
