Many of us around Sacramento were anxiously awaiting the nominations for the Academy Awards this morning. Why? Because “Lady Bird,” that’s why. Sacramento-raised Greta Gerwig wrote and directed the film, and shot the film right here around town. East Sac, the Fab 40s, I-5, levee roads – it’s a true shout-out and love-story to Sacramento from an amazingly talented director, writer, and woman.

Let’s cut to the big news, “Lady Bird” was nominated in five categories, and that includes “Best Picture.” The other categories in which “Lady Bird” were nominated are for Lead Actress (Saoirse Ronan), Supporting Actress (Laurie Metcalf, who played Lady Bird’s mother), Director (Greta Gerwig of course), and Original Screenplay, which goes to Greta Gerwig as well. Greta not only is also the fifth female director to ever be nominated for “Best Director,” she’s also the first female director to be nominated for her first movie. Pretty awesome!

A lot of incredible movies made the list, so it’s going to be a tough fight, but we think “Lady Bird,” Greta, Saoirse, Laurie, and the rest of the cast and crew will come home with some heavier luggage in March after the Academy Awards is finished.

Here’s the list of all the movies nominated in the Best Picture category:
“Call Me by Your Name”
“Darkest Hour”
“Dunkirk”
“Get Out”
“Lady Bird”
“Phantom Thread”
“The Post”
“The Shape of Water”
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

And here are the other directors in the running:
Christopher Nolan for his film “Dunkirk”
Jordan Peele for “Get Out”
Of course Greta Gerwig for “Lady Bird”
Paul Thomas Anderson for “Phantom Thread”
Guillermo del Toro for “The Shape of Water”

Here’s the fill list of nominations. Who do you think will win in each category? Best picture? Do you think “Lady Bird” has it in the bag?
