Dan Reynolds, singer from the band Imagine Dragons, is trying to change the way we look at “rock and roll.”

Dan joined up with Truth Initiative to launch a new anti-smoking campaign. The ad is going to air during the Grammys on Sunday, the 28th. In the ad, Dan and some researchers discuss marketing tactics that tobacco companies use, saying that lower-income families are targeted. Dan also goes on to talk about how people view the music industry, specifically saying cigarettes and drugs are some of the first things people associate with musicians in the rock music world.

I grew up worshiping Bob Marley and Kurt Cobain and the posters were all over my walls, and I feel like a lot of these musicians who’ve passed on, I can’t speak on their behalf, but I think a lot of them if they could…would do all that they could to change the face of this industry as one of substance abuse. I’m down for everything else with rock and roll — the spirit of it, the sex of it, I love everything about [it], except the drug use. And cigarettes seem to go hand in hand with rock and roll aesthetically, and this needs to change. This needs to stop.

Like he said, kids grow up looking up to celebrities, and seeing them, or hearing stories about them smoking or doing drugs sort of has an “associability” about it. They see it and figure it’s something worth trying, maybe they get hooked on it, and maybe it affects their life.

Here’s a preview of the campaign that’s going to run on Sunday:

Chief Marketing Officer Eric Asche says that in order for us to change the way culture sees things, we have to partner with people who are actually “shaping” culture.

For us, if you really want to shape and challenge cultural norms, it’s important for us to stand next to people who are doing the same thing: people who are shaping culture. I mean, you don’t have to look very far into Dan Reynolds background to see that he is passionate about social issues, he’s passionate about communities that have been marginalized or exploited, and we share a lot of common ground with him in particular.
