For the last few years, it has been heavily contested as to who should take up the James Bond mantle after Daniel Craig retires from the role. Names that have been tossed around have ranged from Tom Hardy and Tom Hiddleston, to Henry Cavill a Michael Fassbender. However, Idris Elba has been a longtime fan favorite and suspected candidate as the man who should be the next to take on the role of 007.
Now, according to Esquire, those rumors may be closer to becoming a reality. They report that the producers of James Bond have increased their discussion of considering Elba for the role of the next Bond. One of the producers, Barbara Broccoli, was reported to have said that the time for a non-white actor to play the iconic role had come, and that Elba should be a leading contender for the part.
These reports give new life to the rumors that Idris Elba would be the next Bond, that first surfaced back in 2014. During the hacking and information leak of Sony, an email, sent by then-studio co-chair Amy Pascal, revealed that Elba “should be the next bond”. Since then, Idris Elba has maintained that he will most likely not be the one to play the next James Bond, but these recent reports may be the change that fans have been hoping for, to see the actor have a chance at playing the iconic movie spy.
