Ellie Goulding explains why she kept pregnancy a secret, reveals advice from pal Katy Perry
In February, we all found out that not only was Ellie Goulding expecting her first child, but she was actually 30 weeks along and had kept it a secret the whole time. However, she did tell some people — including Katy Perry.
Ellie and Katy are pals; they’ve toured together, and Katy attended Ellie’s 2019 wedding to husband Caspar Jopling. Ellie tells the British paper The Telegraph that Katy’s been “great” when it comes to pregnancy advice, like “where to find the best pregnancy pillows to get a good night’s sleep.”
As for why she chose to keep the pregnancy a secret, Ellie explains, “I needed that space to process what was happening. I’ve always defined myself as a touring musician. That’s who I am and what I do. Being a mother wasn’t in my mind frame. I’ve never felt any woman had to be defined by motherhood.”
But Ellie says after she and Caspar moved into a new home, she felt “like we had these proper roots and it was the right moment to say something.”
While awaiting the baby’s arrival next month, Ellie says that she’s spent lockdown taking acting lessons for a yet-to-be-announced project, writing “some of the best songs I’ve ever written,” listening to pregnancy podcasts, and even making food for her elderly neighbors.
She’s also watched the Britney Spears documentary, which she says “made me so angry.”
“I could relate to her story in so many ways: the way the focus on women is never about your work, it’s always about the men and the way you look, the tendency to make the women the villain in break-ups, the horrendous questions we get asked,” notes Ellie, adding, “We all let her down.”
