Demi Lovato co-stars in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, which debuts on Netflix Friday. The comedy, starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, is about musicians competing to represent Iceland in the annual Eurovision Song Contest. Demi plays Katiana, the top contender, and director David Dobkin tells ABC Audio he was surprised she agreed to do it.
“We do some weird stuff with her visually,” Dobkin explains. “I don’t want to say what that is, but I was worried when we sent it to her that she was gonna be like, ‘Ewww, I don’t want to do that!'” But she’s like, ‘Oh, my God, that’s the reason I wanted to do it…the fact that you were gonna f***k me up like that, that was cool!'”
But on a serious note, Dobkin says getting her to make the film was actually difficult, because during that time, she was laying low following her 2018 overdose.
“She had not really been out in the world with her music or any of her story at that time,” he explains. “She was taking a risk. I know her manager was like, ‘Hey, I just wanna make sure she’s taken care of.’ And I was like, “I promise you, this will be a really great experience for her.” And we had so much fun!”
He also confirms that Demi, “loved the movie when she saw it.”
Dobkin also reveals that during the shoot in August and September of 2019, he got an early listen to Demi’s new album, which she still hasn’t released.
“I don’t think anyone knew [she was recording],” Dobkin recalls. “And I was like, ‘Oh my God, you have a whole album ready to go!'”
Hopefully, we’ll get to hear that album in the near future.
