With Monday being Demi Lovato’s 26th birthday, friends, family, and fans alike are sharing personal messages on social media to celebrate the singer’s life and well-being after her drug overdose last month. The hashtag “HappyBirthdayDemi” is being used to share the love and appreciation, as Lovato is currently undergoing treatment and rehabilitation and will have limited contact with the social media world. One of these posts shared was from Lovato’s very own, 16-year-old sister, Madison De La Garza.
Yahoo News reports that De La Garza shared a photo on Instagram of Lovato holding her as a baby. In the post, De La Garza wrote how thankful she was for the doctors who helped save her sister’s life, as well as the people around the world that shared their love and support during the scary time. “Without all these people, I wouldn’t have my big sister anymore,” she said poignantly. After sharing personal anecdotes about her close relationship with Lovato and the side of her sister that the media fails to see, De La Garza concluded with, “…she’s a daughter, a friend, and my big sister … and I am so, so thankful that I can tell her happy birthday.”
These heartfelt sentiments come after Lovato’s own past words that attributed De La Garza as a reason for the singer’s past attempts at sobriety. An interview with Daily Mail had Lovato sharing, “One of the main reasons of getting sober was so that I could be around my little sister because my mom and dad [said I couldn’t be around her] if I was doing stuff.”
