This Is Us Star Chrissy Metz once auditioned for American Idol. She talked about her negative experience in her memoir This Is Me: Loving the Person You Are Today.
Chrissy wanted to be on the show to make it as a singer. She sang “Heavy Heavy” from Dreamgirls for her audition. Producers Simon Cowell and Nigel Lythgoe, however, had some other ideas. Chrissy felt that people on American Idol wanted her on TV for other reasons. She told Entertainment Tonight:
“You know, I get it, they’re trying to make stories and they’re trying to invest the audience into these characters and I understand the whole scope of everything, especially [since] I was a talent agent. So, I understand what they’re doing. And I was like, ‘Oh, I can sort of see that and I don’t want to be that girl. …Like, if you don’t dig it, you don’t like my voice, I’ll just keep it moving.'”
Chrissy said that she wasn’t afraid to fight back, though:
“But it just felt like — it was like, ‘Oh, how else can we kind of jab?’ and I was like, ‘Don’t — you’re not ready because I’m gonna jab right back.’ Or, I’m just gonna leave because of course that’s not the purpose of me going. I didn’t want to make ridiculous TV. I wanted to, you know, be respected as a singer.”
Despite everything, however, Chrissy is grateful for the overall experience. She told Extra:
“It was actually a really great experience. I’m glad that I showed up for myself and sat in a stadium for eight hours… I was like, ‘I’m committed. I’m gonna see it through.’ If it wasn’t the right path, that’s cool — I would have never had This Is Us.”
