It’s truly the end of an era: Chris Evans is hanging up his Captain America uniform. The actor said his goodbye to the role on his Twitter.
It’s been eight years since Evans debuted in this iconic Marvel role. “Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least,” the actor tweeted. “Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”

Avengers 4, which hits theaters on May 3, 2019, will be the last time audiences see Evans as Captain America. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, it’s entirely possible that another character may step up to fulfill the superhero’s missing role. After all, in the comics, Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) and Sam Wilson (the Falcon) have taken Steve Rogers’ place.
We’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.
