On Wednesday morning, drivers on Interstate 70 got quite the surprise. In a bizarre spectacle, thousands of dollars in cash littered the highway, causing a decent amount of chaos.

According to Fox 59, the back of an armored Brinks truck flew open while driving down the interstate.

This caused approximately $600,000 to rain down on the busy highway. As ISP Corporal Brock McCooe described it:

“Bags of money were falling out of the back onto the interstate. Sort of something out of a movie scene, where you have bills, loose bills flying all over the interstate, vehicles stopping, people getting out of their cars.”

Troopers also described people from a nearby neighborhood hopping fences to fill their pockets with cash.

It’s still unclear how exactly this incident happened. When talking with police, the Brinks truck driver explained he didn’t even know what was happening until another driver signaled to him. It was only then that he looked back to see the unsecured doors leaking money. Whether human error or a mechanical failure lead to the accident is still under investigation.

Although this sounds like a dream come true to anyone that got some of the cash, that’s not quite the case. Everyone that took money from the scene technically stole it and can be charged with theft if caught. However, if people return any of the money to the police, they won’t face any charges. McCooe explained:

“If you’re willing to, in good conscience, turn it back in, there’s amnesty, there’s no real questions asked if you’re willing to give it back.”
