Blake Shelton and Adam Levine are well-known for their playful banter on The Voice. While it’s usually all in good fun, one experience with Kelly Clarkson took things a little too far for the Maroon 5 front man…
According to E! News, Shelton told the story during Monday night’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Although Kelly Clarkson is the newest judge on The Voice, she and Shelton have been friends for years. So, on New Years Eve in 2012, Shelton invited Clarkson to come see Levine perform at a casino so they could “make fun” of him.
After the concert, the crew got a ride back to Shelton’s Texas ranch with a designated driver. However, police pulled their car over on the way, much to the confusion of the musicians. As Shelton explained:
“Not that we don’t respect the police, but we knew we hadn’t done anything wrong. So, you can be a little cocky, or you know, at that point….Adam didn’t see it that way because Adam is from Los Angeles, where you don’t talk back to the police. And in Oklahoma, if you’ve got a good point, you do sometimes, you know?”
So Shelton and Clarkson began badgering the cop, much to Levine’s chagrin. The country star revealed:
“Especially Kelly. She was ribbing this guy. He had a mustache that wasn’t cool looking.”
Unfortunately, the whole experience was too much for Adam Levine, who thought they were going to get arrested. After yelling “Shut Up!” at the American Idol winner, he broke into tears.
