Apple Adds Anti-Addiction iPhone Features So You’ll Put Down Your Phone
Apple is adding anti-addiction iPhone features to their popular smart phones in order to help combat phone addiction, following similar moves made by competitors.

According to Bloomberg, the company is introducing new iPhone features that will help people limit their phone use.
These new features include updates to the “Do Not Disturb” tool and new ways to manage notifications. While iPhone users would previously wake up to all the notifications they missed overnight, they will now receive a new “Good morning” screen with a quick summary of all their alerts.
Another new addition is “Screen Time,” which provides an activity report showing how much time you spend on your phone. It also tracks time spent in each app and records which apps send you the most notifications. The new feature will let users customize time limits for certain apps and let them receive alerts reminding them to put their phone down. If users ignore the phone’s warning, the app will eventually shut off unless the user changes the setting.
The company is also adding in new parental controls so they can limit the time their kids spend on certain apps.

These new updates came about after the company faced criticism for helping perpetuate smartphone addiction. The company wants people to view their iPhones as tools, not something that should be causing addiction. As former Apple executive Tony Fadell explained in recent interview:
“We need to have tools and data to allow us to understand how we consume digital media. We need to get finer-grain language and start to understand that an iPhone is just a refrigerator, it’s not the addiction.”
The new update also follows moves made by competitors who’ve been rolling out comparable features. For instance, Google introduced a similar set of new features for their Android phones a recent conference.
