We didn’t ask for the American Idol reboot, but ABC went for it anyway. So did it pay off for the network? Nope. Unfortunately for judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, their debut was the least-watched among all prior debuts on Fox, according to early Nielsen results. However, ABC won the night in viewers (8.2 million) and in the key 18-49 demographic (1.7 rating). That still doesn’t change the fact the season premiere fell 23% from the last season premiere in January 2016 on Fox.
