While recreational marijuana is now legal in California, there are still restrictions on where and when you can light up. However, as many know, you still can’t smoke on airplanes and one man on a Southwest flight just learned that the hard way…

According to CBS Los Angeles, a plane travelling from San Francisco to Los Angeles recently had to make an emergency landing.

Why?

A passenger on board decided to hide inside a bathroom and smoke a joint. Multiple passengers reported smelling smoke following the secret smoke break, while at least one said they could actually smell the marijuana. That passenger, Jonathan Burkes, explained:

“It looked like that someone needed to smoke a joint on a plane, and he went into the bathroom, smoked his blunt, and set off the fire alarm.”

Southwest revealed that the passenger in question was turned over into police custody once the plane reached the ground. Smoking anything on an airplane is illegal, and the passenger may face criminal charges for the incident.

The remaining passengers were eventually able to complete their flight, landing in Burbank later that day.
