A 90s Favorite, The Tamagotchi Is Coming Back

The favorite 90s electronic pet “Tamagotchi” is coming back, and I mean literally the one from the 90s is being reproduced and released.

Tamagotchi, the little electronic video game-like pet thing. It was really popular back in the 90s. I had two of them back in third grade (maybe second?). The little alien thing that hatches from a virtual egg and relies on you to care for it. That thing. It’s coming back.

When I say it’s coming back, I don’t mean they’re redesigning it and re-launching the toy. It’s coming back, in the original packaging, with the original programming. They’re essentially re-releasing the exact same toy they released back in 1997. Now, there will be some new colors and a couple different games included with some special edition ones, but the company is releasing the original programming. Basically that means it will operate the exact same as it did back in 1997.

By the way, the Tamagotchi cost $17.99 at most stores back then. Adjusted for inflation, that would be somewhere in the $28.xx range today. The new price for this re-release is set to be $19.99. Bargain! They’re up for pre-ordering on September 30th, so in just a few weeks you can have a brand new e-pet from 1997 to introduce to a new generation. Remember, this thing was THE most-desired toy for Christmas back in 1997. Source.
